President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and the first lady, Michelle, were at the UK embassy this Monday morning (12) to sign the book of condolences for the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

“On behalf of the Brazilian government and people, I express my deepest condolences to the people of the United Kingdom, as well as the royal family and King Charles III, on the passing of Queen Elizabeth II,” Bolsonaro wrote.

“I express my admiration for a woman of great personality whose sense of duty and devotion left, over more than seven decades of reign, a legacy of leadership and stability for the British people and the world.”

The embassy’s charge d’affaires, Melanie Hopkins, welcomed the president and his wife and, on social media, thanked them for the message and informed that the book will be sent to the British royal family.

Bolsonaro will attend the queen’s funeral in London next Monday (19). To supporters at Palácio da Alvorada, he confirmed his trip to participate in the “farewell of the queen”. He will then leave for New York, where he will address the opening of the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday (20).

On Sunday night (11), Itamaraty had already informed about the trip in a note. “The invitation to the ceremony was sent last night [sábado, 10], to the Brazilian Embassy in London. When consulted on Sunday morning, the President of the Republic instructed Itamaraty to respond positively to the invitation”.

The move will take place in the final stretch of the presidential campaign. The representative seeks to be re-elected to the position on October 2nd. According to polls, he is in second place, behind former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).

On Thursday (8), the date of Elizabeth II’s death, the Chief Executive declared three days of official mourning in the country and mourned her death on social media, calling the British “queen of all”.

On Twitter, Bolsonaro described the sovereign as “an extraordinary and singular woman, whose example of leadership, humility and love for the country will continue to inspire us and the whole world until the end of time”.

Other heads of state, such as the American Joe Biden, have also confirmed their intention to travel to London. The website Politico and the newspaper The Guardian anticipated this Sunday the protocols to which they will be submitted.

In order not to overload Heathrow airport, the UK requests that travel be made on commercial flights or to other terminals; so as not to complicate the traffic or to fill the ceremony places, each representative can only be with his wife or husband and go by private car to a predefined location, from where everyone will be taken by bus.
