Elderly patient in Slovenia declared dead after being mistaken for someone else

The Minister of Health submitted his resignation, but it was not accepted by the Prime Minister. The case is being investigated.

The identities of two elderly patients were “mixed up” in Slovenia, with one of them being cremated with the other’s name when he died.

Health Minister Daniel Besic Lorendan called this situation “absolutely unacceptable”. “Someone cremated their father yesterday and the next day found out he was alive, while another family realized their relative had died,” he said.

The two men were in wheelchairs, were the same age, lived in the same nursing home and were taken to Kellie Hospital in the same ambulance. Two days later, one died but the other’s family was mistakenly informed. After the autopsy, the family took care of the funeral and cremation of their “relative”.

The mistake was realized when the second man recovered and returned to the nursing home. The staff then saw that he was wearing a hospital ID with the other’s name on his wrist.

“In the digital age, in the 21st century, this is absolutely unacceptable,” said the visibly shocked minister, adding that such a mistake should never have happened, even if one of the elderly was suffering from advanced dementia.
