Israel examines a new framework for resolving the dispute with Cyprus, which is pending for the Aphrodite deposit.
The financial newspaper Calcalist, in an exclusive report published on September 15, reports – citing unnamed secure sources – that Energy Minister Karin Elharar will travel to Cyprus next Monday, September 19.
During the meeting he will have with the Cypriot counterpart of Natasa Pileidou, he writes that he will propose to the Cypriot side to take over that 10% of the field, which the Israeli side considers to belong to it, against monetary compensation.
According to Calcalist, the Israeli Ministry of Energy is considering this proposal since the issue has been pending for too long, has not been resolved by the companies involved, and the chances of it being resolved at the intergovernmental level are considered slim. On the contrary, if Israel finally receives monetary compensation for the part of the deposit it intends to hand over to the Republic of Cyprus, the benefit is considered significant both for the public treasury and for Israeli taxpayers, reports the Israeli newspaper.
The Israeli government did not comment on Calcalist’s report.
Israel is in the pre-election period ahead of the November 1 elections, and at the same time, the talks it is holding with Lebanon to resolve the dispute over the maritime delimitation of their EEZs are at an advanced stage, with the faction of Prime Minister Yair Lapid, to which he belongs the Minister of Energy Karin Elharar, to promote the resolution of chronic outstanding issues with Lebanon and, if possible, with Cyprus before the November elections.
