“It is the same scenario as in Buka. It is a lie and of course we will defend the truth in this story,” the Kremlin spokesman said

The Kremlin today rejected as lies the claims that Russian forces committed war crimes in the Ukrainian region of Kharkiv.

About 450 bodies — most of which, according to Ukraine, were civilians — were found in areas mass burial near Iziumafter Russian troops were expelled this month from the Kharkiv region, much of which they had controlled since the first weeks of the military campaign in Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said investigators in the area had found evidence of torture, including bodies with their hands bound, and accused Russian troops of committing war crimes.

Asked today about Zelensky’s statements, the Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov he told reporters: “It’s the same scenario as in Buka. It is a lie and of course we will defend the truth in this story.”

Russia has previously rejected claims that its troops committed war crimes in Buka, outside Kyiv, after evidence emerged after Russia’s withdrawal at the end of March that civilians had been killed while the town was under the control of Russian troops. .
