“The situation is getting worse and we cannot afford to wait until something catastrophic happens,” Grossi said after a meeting on the situation at the headquarters of the French delegation to the UN.

The situation at its nuclear power plant Zaporizhia “it is getting worse,” International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) director-general Raphael Grossi warned on Wednesday, following Ukraine’s accusations of new shelling by Russian forces in the region.

“The situation is getting worse and we cannot afford to wait until something catastrophic happens,” Grossi said after a meeting on the situation at the headquarters of the French delegation to the UN.

The Director of the Organization said that he discussed the issue with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, with whom he met this morning on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. “As long as the bombings continue, the danger will be enormous,” he stressed.

Ukrainian authorities charged Russia that it bombed the largest nuclear power plant in Europe again, while assuring that the levels of radioactivity did not exceed normal limits.

“Even under the worst of circumstances, diplomacy should never stop (…) It is our responsibility to present realistic proposals and that is what we are trying to do,” commented Grossi.

French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonnade said the goal was “the demilitarization of the plant, within the framework of Ukraine’s national sovereignty.”

The factory, which is controlled by Russian forces, has been the target of bombings several times in recent months. Kyiv and Moscow blame each other for these bombings.
