“Dying for Putin”: What the German press is writing about conscription in Russia

by

“The Soviet Union had achieved its cohesion through fear, now fear is supposed to act as a deterrent again,” comments Handesblatt.

Yesterday’s decree of Russian President Vladimir Putin on partial mobilization is commented by German guy.

At Süddeutsche Zeitung we read: “For almost seven months the Kremlin and its followers have been trying to square the circle. While the ‘propaganda battalions’ on state television prepared their viewers for weeks for the mortal danger from the West, the government did everything to ensure that the comfortable life of the residents of Moscow and St. Petersburg during the war and of sanctions will not be much affected. This is no longer possible. The war has reached Russia.”

The newspaper Frankfurter Rundschau states that the chancellor Olaf Solz is absolutely right when he says that it is a “an act of desperation by Putin. As it states: “Since there are currently no military successes, the occupied Ukrainian territories will become Russian after virtual referendums. If Kyiv then tries to retake them, Putin considers himself justified in using nuclear weapons. He made this clear in his speech and stressed: ‘It is not a bluff’. The risk is there. But it shouldn’t paralyze us.”

The newspaper comments on the Russian President’s threats to use nuclear weapons Handesblatt: “Putin wants to impose victory with threats, above all with the threat of nuclear war. That is why he wants to make the Ukrainians flee and discourage the West from continuing to supply Ukraine with weapons. The Soviet Union had achieved its cohesion through fear, now fear is supposed to act as a deterrent again.”

The editor of the newspaper points out a special aspect concerning the relations between Russia and China Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (Pi): “The Western reactions after the announcement of the partial mobilization cannot have taken Putin by surprise. But Beijing’s rhetorical distancing is rather painful for him. That the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman is calling not only for a cease-fire but also for a quick solution that takes into account the legitimate security concerns of all sides shows that China is losing patience with Putin.”.
