Natural gas leak in the Nord Stream 2 pipeline in the Baltic Sea

by

Before the announcement, Germany’s economy ministry had indicated it was investigating an unexpected and rapid “pressure drop” in the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.

A natural gas leak has been detected in the undersea Nord Stream 2 pipeline in the Baltic Sea, which connects Russia to Germany but has not been put into operation, Danish authorities and the operator company announced today.

The leak was located about 20 kilometers southeast of the island of Bornholm, just outside Danish territorial waters, and is classified as “dangerous to navigation,” according to Danish authorities who blocked a zone within a radius of five nautical miles from the site. Maritime authorities in Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Russia have been informed.

Before the announcement, Germany’s economy ministry had indicated it was investigating an unexpected and rapid “pressure drop” in the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.

Although Nord Stream 2 was denied a license to operate under sanctions over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the pipeline had been “technically prepared” and “filled with natural gas,” Nord Stream 2 AG spokesman Ulrich Liesek told AFP.
