The Russian Ministry of Defense has announced that training has begun in Crimea and near the Ukrainian border

THE Moscow announced on Tuesday that conscripted reservists had begun training across Russia, in areas including the Rostov region on the border with Ukraine and Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula, which was seized by Russian forces in 2014.

The Ministry of Defense announced on its Telegram channel that it has also started training in its enclave Kaliningrad, which borders Poland and Lithuania, both NATO member countries.

In Rostov, where Russian forces were massed before invading Ukraine on February 24, the ministry announced that “all personnel have already been provided with the necessary clothing, received weapons and started live-fire training.”

President Vladimir Putin last week ordered Russia’s first conscription since World War Two, which will see hundreds of thousands of extra citizens sent to fight in Ukraine.

In Kaliningrad, where Russia’s military presence includes missiles capable of carrying a nuclear warhead, training began at the Baltic Fleet base.

“Civilians, called up from the reserve, restore their skills in the handling and maintenance of weapons and military and special equipment,” the ministry said in a statement.

Training is also given to improve marksmanship skills and prepare military personnel for “bold actions on the battlefield”.

According to the ministry, about 2,000 reservists have already received their weapons in Crimea, the Ukrainian peninsula that Moscow seized in 2014 and annexed to Russia.
