Donya was transferred to Ward 209 of Evin prison, the notorious prison ward in Tehran, which is allegedly run by the intelligence ministry.
A woman who ate at a Tehran restaurant without wearing her hijab (headscarf) and whose photo went viral on social media has been arrested, her sister said today, as protests over the death continue of Mahsa Amini.
The photo shows Donya Rudd – on the right – sitting in a traditional Tehran restaurant having breakfast with a friend, who is also not wearing a hijab.
SHOCKING: A couple of women having breakfast, most probably omelets. Nothing unusual. Millions of people around the world do that. But, Donia the woman on the right was arrested in #Iran yesterday just because of that. #IranProtests2022 #MahsaAmini #Mahsa_Amini pic.twitter.com/52E9CzH0ri

The photo was widely circulated on social media, with users hailing the two women’s move to show defiance against the Islamic Republic’s strict dress code for women.
“Yesterday, after the release of this photo, security agencies contacted my sister Donia Rudd and asked her to give them some explanations,” wrote the arrested sister, Dina, on Twitter.
“Today, after she went where she was told, she was arrested. After a few hours of silence, Donia told me in a short phone call that she was transferred to Ward 209 of Evin Prison,” she said, referring to the infamous Tehran prison ward allegedly run by the intelligence ministry.
“Our family is very worried about her condition,” Dina said.
In recent days, Iranian media outside the country have been showing more and more images of civil disobedience with women in Iran sharing photos of themselves walking, shopping or drinking coffee without their hijabs.
“They just went to have their breakfast without their hijab. Arrested. That’s how barbaric and sick Iran’s hijab policy is,” tweeted Omid Memarian, a prominent US-based activist and journalist.
Some media users likened Rudd’s actions to those of Rosa Parks, the African-American civil rights activist who refused to give up her bus seat to a white man and was arrested for putting Parks’ photo on a bus next to the picture of Rudd in the cafe.
Activists say Iran is facing its toughest crackdown in years on protests that have erupted since Amini’s death.
