The risk of Russian President Vladimir Putin using nuclear weapons exists but does not appear to be “imminent,” White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan said today.
“There is a risk, given Putin’s levity and belligerence,” and Washington “was very clear about what the consequences would be,” Sullivan told reporters. But he added that “currently we see no indications” of such a thing.
The United States will announce within the next week the shipment of new weapons to Ukraine, Sullivan said. There will be “an announcement next week about sending aid immediately,” he said, recalling that Washington has already promised Ukraine to continue supplying it with weapons.
Among these weapons systems are 18 Himars multiple rocket launchers, but they will have to be built first.
Congress earlier approved $12.3 billion in aid for Ukraine as part of a bill authorizing a so-called “temporary” budget to avoid shutting down federal agencies. This new aid package gives President Biden the right to ask the Pentagon to transfer $3.7 billion worth of military equipment to Ukraine. It also provides for $4.5 billion to help Kyiv avoid a deviation from fiscal targets.
With this new package, US aid to Ukraine reaches $65 billion since the start of the war.
