The nuclear plant has been controlled since March by Russian forces

The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Raphael Grossi, assured today that there is “no security risk” to its nuclear power plant Zaporizhiain Ukraine, after the removal of its director by the Russians.

“There is absolutely no danger”, Grossi said, on the sidelines of a visit to Yerevan, Armenia. He responded this way when asked if there was a risk to the safety of Europe’s largest nuclear power plant after the expulsion on Monday of Ihor Murasov, its director, who had been arrested and held for two days by the Russians.

“The most important thing for Murasov is that he was released (…) and is with his family again,” commented Grossi.

The IAEA said it is still “unclear” who will now head the station.

On Monday, Murasov was released into territory controlled by Kyiv. He had been arrested by a “Russian patrol” while on his way from the nuclear power plant in the city of Enerhodar.

The nuclear plant has been controlled since March by Russian forces, but it is located very close to the front line, between territories controlled by Kyiv and those occupied by Russia. The two sides have been blaming each other for months for the bombings at the station facilities.

Grossi is due to visit Russia and Ukraine in the coming days to discuss nuclear safety.
