THE North Korea launched two ballistic missiles overnight Saturday into Sunday, according to official sources from Japan and South Korea.

Japan’s defense ministry said both missiles reached an altitude of 100 kilometers and covered a distance of 350 kilometers. The first was launched at 01:47 (local time, Sunday, 19:47 on Saturday Greek time) and the second six minutes later, Japan’s Deputy Defense Minister Toshiro Ino told reporters. According the South Korean news agency Yonhap citing South Korea’s armed forces as a source, these were short-range missiles fired from the Munchon area.

This was the seventh time in the past two weeks that North Korea has conducted missile tests.

The missiles fell into the sea, outside its EEZ Japan. According to the coast guard, no Japanese vessels sailing in the area reported experiencing problems.

THE Toshiro Ino he said Japanese authorities were investigating to determine what kind of missiles they were and were looking into the possibility that they were submarine-launched missiles.

On Tuesday, an intermediate-range ballistic missile flew over Japan, the first time in five years. Authorities appealed to residents to find safe shelter. It followed joint US-South Korean military exercises, which ended today and were preceded by exercises with Japan earlier this week.

North Korea justified the missile tests by citing the US “military threat”.

Ino said tonight that Tokyo cannot tolerate continued missile launches by Pyongyang.
