“Our family is under intense pressure from officials of the Islamic Republic not to speak to human rights organizations,” says the cousin of 22-year-old Amini, who became a symbol in Iran
The family of the 22-year-old Mahsa Aminiof the Iranian girl who breathed her last at the hands of Ethon Police after her arrest three weeks ago and became a symbol of Iranian repression, argues that has received death threats, but also warnings not to take part in the demonstrations.
“Our family accepts intense pressure by officials of the Islamic Republic not to speak to human rights organizations or channels outside Iran and to inform anyone in the outside world of her death,” he told the BBC cousin her Mahsa Amini.
Erfan Mortezai is a fighter with the Komala Peshmerga, an exiled Iranian Kurdish opposition party based in Iraq. For years, long before the death of his cousin, he has been trying to overthrow the Iranian regime.
Efran uses the 22-year-old’s Kurdish name, Zina, by which she was known to all her acquaintances and loved ones. Mahsha was her Iranian name. Her parents were forced to give it to her as some Kurdish names are banned in Iran.
“Zina was a normal person, she was apolitical,” says Erfan. “The regime was making up scenarios and disinformation – saying that Zina was in contact with me and that I taught her and sent her back to Iran to do a certain activity, when in fact this is completely unfounded,” he added.
At the same time, he also referred to threats received by his family, which particularly worries him. “They are being tortured by the Islamic Republic. The regime officials have us threaten via Instagram with fake accounts and have told family members in Iran that if they get involved in the protests, they may be killed».
However, Efran also receives threats against his life. “I myself receive phone threats. How if they see me in the city, they will kidnap me and kill me” he pointed out.
