The coronation of King Charles III will take place on Saturday 6 May 2023, i.e. eight months after Queen Elizabeth’s succession, Buckingham Palace has announced.
The coronation ceremony will be performed in Westminster Abbey, as it has been for nine centuries, by the Archbishop of Canterbury, the head of the Church of England.
Queen consort Camilla will be crowned along with the new king.
According to the Palace, the ceremony “will reflect the role of the monarchy today and look to the future, while being rooted in centuries of tradition and ritual.”
Reports have revealed Charles’ intention for a shorter and more modest ceremony compared to his mother’s coronation in 1953.
During the ceremony the monarch is “anointed, blessed and consecrated” by the Archbishop.
