The United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday condemned the recent “illegal annexations” of four Ukrainian regions to the Russian Federation, approving the draft resolution that had been tabled with 143 votes in favor, 5 against and 35 abstentions.

In addition to Russia, Belarus, Syria, North Korea and Nicaragua voted against the text. The votes in favor were two more than the 141 that approved the text condemning the invasion half a year ago. Brazil, Saudi Arabia and Turkey voted in favor.

Key powers such as China, India, Pakistan and South Africa abstained, despite intensive US diplomatic efforts to win them over.

Although the decisions of the General Assembly are not legally binding, they have a special symbolic value and show, for the West, the degree of international isolation of Moscow.

The text calls the annexation of the four Ukrainian regions (Danietsk, Lugansk, Kherson, Zaporizhia) invalid and illegal, demands that these regions be returned to Kyiv and that Russian troops withdraw from Ukrainian territory.

The vote in the General Assembly followed the recent one in the Security Council on an identical text, in which Russia, a permanent member state, exercised its right of veto.
