A report by the World Health Organization has revealed that a drug may be linked to the deaths of dozens of children in The Gambia
India’s Maharashtra state drug regulator today asked for spot checks on all medicinal syrups, mainly to detect the percentage of diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol in them, CNBC TV18 reported.
The decision came a day after Indian authorities announced they had suspended production at the drug company Maiden Pharmaceuticals, following a World Health Organization report that revealed the drug may be linked to death of dozens of children in Gambia.
The WHO announced last week that an analysis of four Maiden cough and cold syrups found “unacceptable” levels of diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol, substances that can prove toxic and lead to kidney failure.
Gambian police in a preliminary report released on Tuesday said the deaths of 69 children from acute kidney failure were linked to cough syrups made in India and imported into the country through a US-based company.
