France will not nuke Russia if Ukraine receives a nuclear attack from Moscow, made clear late Wednesday night Emmanuel Macron.

“Our doctrine is based on the fundamental interests of the nation. They are clearly defined and would not be directly affected at all if, for example, there was a ballistic nuclear attack in Ukraine, in the region,” Macron said during an interview with public broadcaster France 2 late on Wednesday.

It is the first time Macron has discussed in detail France’s nuclear deterrence doctrine regarding Ukraine. Asked to comment on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s recent threats of nuclear war, Emmanuel Macron underlined that “Russia has nuclear weapons, as does France”, adding that “the less we talk about them and the less we use them to threaten, the more reliable we become.”

Russia has committed war crimes that have left their mark, Emmanuel Macron emphasized, calling on Vladimir Putin “to stop this war, to respect the territorial integrity of Ukraine and return to the negotiating table.”

The French president also said that, after the latest Russian bombings, the Ukrainian crisis has escalated and that Moscow, by hitting cities and energy infrastructure, aims to end all Ukrainian resistance. He also emphasized that France will continue to strengthen Ukraine in every way without, however, getting involved in the war, because as he characteristically stated “France does not wish for a world war”.
