The blast took place at noon yesterday on a road connecting Badiagara to Gudaka in the Mopti sector, according to the law enforcement source.

Central Mali is one of the hotbeds of violence and action by jihadist organizations that emerged in the north of the country in 2012. Their actions have spread to the country and to neighboring states (Burkina Faso, Niger).

Landmines and improvised explosive devices are often weapons of choice for jihadists. They can explode on contact, if approached, or from a distance.

A report by the UN Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) cited 245 attacks as of August 31 with such weapons in 2021 and 134 in 2022. Mines and improvised explosive devices killed 103 people in 2021 and 72 in 2022, according to the same source. .

The targets are mainly members of the Malian army and MINUSMA. But at least a quarter of the victims are civilians, according to the report.
