A climate of controversy has arisen for both Boris Johnson and the Conservative Party in Britain, with the Downing Street party scandal being seen as the culmination of a series of corruption scandals and allegations of corruption in the heart.
Speaking on BBC radio on Friday morning, Conservative Lord Barwell, former Prime Minister Theresa May’s chief of staff, said there was “definitely talk” of party lawmakers overthrowing Mr Johnson. “There are MPs who have discussed this with me,” said Lord Barwell, commenting that if Mr Johnson was no longer considered an “electoral advantage” for the party then “it would really be in trouble”.
According to Lord Barwell, the questioning of the incumbent Prime Minister by his party officials is the result of “irritability” from a series of political “self-injuries”, such as denials of the alleged downing parties in Downing Street in the midst of a ban, the alleged attempt to deceive how the cost of renovating his apartment on Downing Street was covered and the attempt to protect Conservative MP Owen Patterson who had openly violated the rules of conduct of MPs.
The same Conservative official added that there was “genuine anger” among Tory lawmakers, especially over the Downing Street parties.
Meanwhile, Mr. Johnson is facing the prospect of “rebellion” by dozens of his deputies who next week intend to vote against the additional measures against the Omicron variant that will take effect today.
Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, Labor leader Sir Kir Starmer called on Conservative MPs to “take action now and oust Boris Johnson”, whom he described as “unsuitable” for the country’s leadership.
“Are they prepared to endure for the next two years (until the elections) the increased degeneration of themselves and their party, to be called upon to defend the indefensible and to subject themselves and their party to further disrepute? “Because this is not going to change, he’s unfit for the job,” said Sir Kir.
The British Prime Minister sees the pressure intensify further, as today it is revealed that the communications manager of his office, Jack Doyle, was present at the irregular party on December 18, 2020 on Downing Street. According to Sky News, Mr. Doyle distributed awards to members of the Prime Minister’s Office that night.
As announced, the investigation announced by Boris Johnson that will be done by the secretary of the cabinet for the reported party will cover two more potentially irregular gatherings towards the end of 2020 in Downing Street and in the Ministry of Education, the first of which was attended by the Prime Minister spoke.
According to the British media, Mr. Johnson’s advisor on ministerial ethics is on the verge of resigning.
Lord Gade had investigated how the renovation of the apartment where Mr Johnson lives with his wife on Downing Street was covered. After receiving assurances from the Prime Minister that he did not know in time that the initial expenses had been covered by a Conservative donor without even declaring that the party should do so, Lord Gade had acquitted Mr Johnson of corruption charges.
However, as it turned out yesterday from the parallel investigation of the Electoral Commission, Mr. Johnson himself had sent a message to the supporter of the Conservative Party, Lord Brownlow, asking for money for the renovation.
Boris Johnson is now accused by the opposition of misleading the ethics adviser, with the Labor Party calling for a new parliamentary inquiry into breaches of ministerial conduct.
All of the above have an impact on public opinion. A poll by the Times later gave Labor a 37% lead over the Conservatives, compared to 33% for the Conservatives. A second poll by the Daily Mirror puts Labor ahead by six percentage points, up 40% from 34%.
In the first poll, three out of four respondents believe that the party on Downing Street took place, 68% believe that Boris Johnson was not telling the truth when he denied it and 2/3 believe that the Prime Minister probably did not follow the rules of the ban.
