Tragedy in Turkey. Two people lost their lives and 20 were injured from the powerful explosion in a coal mine in the city of Amasra, the authorities announced.

The explosion occurred at 6.15 pm in a coal mine in the Turkish city in the Black Sea Bardin Province. According to earlier reports, there were at least 49 workers trapped due to the explosion, which was caused by an as yet unknown cause.

As reported by the governor of the province Nurtak Arslan, according to the information so far, 44 people are trapped at 300 meters depth, and five people at 350 meters.

“Fourteen people they were pulled out of the coal mine,” he said. Rescue efforts are ongoing.

Many ambulances and rescue crews went to the scene. Energy Minister Fatih Donmez and Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu also went to Amasra on the orders of President Erdogan.

The mine is owned by state-owned Turkish Hard Coal Entrprises, according to Turkey’s Disaster Management Authority (AFAD).

The Bardin General Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation into the accident, which was carried out by three prosecutors.
