At least 20 people were killed and 15 injured in a bus crash in southwestern Colombia on Saturday, police said.
Among the injured are a 3-year-old girl and an 8-year-old boy.
The crash occurred on the Pan-American Highway and “unfortunately we have a death toll of 20,” a police officer in charge of road traffic in Narinio province told reporters.
The bus traveling between the port of Tumaco and the city of Cali overturned on the road early Saturday due to a “mechanical failure”, the same source added.
According to Colonel Oscar Lambrea, in charge of road traffic and transport at the national police, “the failure of the braking system is possible”.
According to preliminary findings, the driver lost control of the bus while exiting a bend while visibility was reduced due to fog.
Rescue services worked for more than nine hours there to extricate the injured and transport them to various hospitals in the area.
