Germany: Hospitals and clinics are threatened with a “lockout” due to the cost of energy

In Germany, there are 1,900 hospitals with a capacity of 490,000 beds

Hospitals and clinics in Germany are at increased risk of bankruptcy and closure due to energy prices, Health Minister Karl Lauterbach warned on Sunday.

“If we don’t react quickly and really drastically, there will be closures” of health facilities, Mr. Lauterbach stressed during an interview with the public television network ARD.

He said he plans to hold talks on giving more federal financial aid to hospitals and clinics with Finance Minister Christian Lindner on Tuesday. He added that he can’t reveal numbers before they discuss.

Last week, the German Hospital Federation called on the government to take immediate action to avert the risk of hospital closures, stressing that the sector faces a funding gap to meet its material and energy needs of around €15bn. euros in 2022 and 2023.

Although he disputed that figure, Mr. Lauterbach agreed that “hospitals will face a very drastic liquidity problem in the immediate months ahead.”

In Germany, with more than 83 million inhabitants, 1,900 hospitals operate with a total nominal capacity of 490,000 beds.
