Shwela Braverman: The first ‘blemish’ in Rishi Sunak’s ‘rule of all talent’?

by

Opposition parties say her return to the cabinet undermined Rishi Sunak’s pledge to have “integrity and accountability” in his government.

Her “total reset”. Suella Braverman in the cabinet it seems that he is “tarnishing” his announcement Rishi Sunak that his government would be “a government of all talents”.

The 42-year-old Braverman returns to the Ministry of the Interior, the same ministry from which she had resigned six days ago due to… a blunder, as she sent an official document from her personal email to her colleague in Parliament, violating security protocols. In the second paragraph of her resignation letter to Liz Truss, she even said that “we must undertake responsibility for our mistakes”. In her resignation letter, however, Braverman was scathing of the Truss administration. Ideologically she belongs to the far right wing of the Tories, with hardline positions on immigration despite being the daughter of immigrants herself, but she expressed her support for Sunak, which some analysts in the UK called as… “talent”.

Opposition parties say her return to the cabinet undermined Rishi Sunak’s pledge to have “integrity and accountability” in his government. However, prominent Conservative government figures have thrown a “shield of protection” at the new government – and secondarily at Braverman.

Asked again today about the “Braverman affair”, the finance minister, Jeremy Hunt, claimed that his colleague “apologised for her mistakes”, took responsibility and resigned.

“But the British people need to see a ‘united Conservative party – a cabinet of all talent’,” he insisted, using the prime minister’s well-known statement.
But also the foreign minister James Cleverley defended the reappointment of Suella Braverman as interior minister. He insisted he had “shown integrity by apologizing for breaching the regulations”.

“Clearly the prime minister wants to make sure the ministry can deliver work from day one,” he noted.
