Pope Francis on Monday warned a group of young seminarians in Rome against internet pornography, which he said he considered a danger. “It’s something that weakens the soul. The devil gets in there: it weakens the priestly heart.”
The information was released by the Italian newspaper La Repubblica.
According to the pope, nuns and priests also suffer from addiction to internet pornography. Francis defended smartphones, said that they are a progress in technology and that their use is necessary, but asked that any sexual content stored on the devices be deleted.
“And I’m not just talking about criminal pornography, like child abuse: that’s already degeneracy. But rather ‘normal’ pornography. Dear brothers, be aware of this,” he added, in a speech to seminarians and priests. The pope asked that, if it is not possible to erase the images from the cell phone, students defend themselves to “not enter this”.
The pontiff has spoken out against pornography on several occasions in recent times. Last Friday (21), he included her in a series of challenges that families face.
Earlier, in June, he had said that web pornography must be denounced as a permanent attack on the dignity of men and women. “It’s not just about protecting children — an urgent task for the authorities and for all of us — but also declaring pornography a threat to public health,” he told members of a network of family associations, according to the Catholic News Agency. .
Citing a 2017 speech he gave at an online congress on child dignity, the pope further said that it would be an illusion to think that a society that consumes a lot of internet pornography is capable of effectively protecting minors.
