The Turkish president spoke by phone with the Swedish prime minister and said that terrorist organizations should not hold Sweden’s NATO membership attempt hostage.
The Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan he told the Swedish prime ministerUlf Christerson, in a telephone conversation that the two leaders had today, that he sees “in the interest of both sides to prevent terrorist organizations from holding hostage Sweden’s attempt to join NATO as well as bilateral relations with Turkey”, according to a statement issued by Ankara tonight.
The Swedish prime minister tweeted that he had a “constructive conversation” and added that he intends to travel to Ankara “soon”, without saying when he might make that visit.
The Turkish head of state responded that he “would be happy to welcome Ulf Kristerson in Ankara,” declaring “ready to promote bilateral relations with the Swedish government in all fields,” according to the statement of the Turkish presidency.
Sweden and Finland applied to join NATO in May in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, but faced objections from Turkey.
Ankara accuses those countries of harboring people Turkey considers terrorists, such as Kurdish fighters and those Ankara accuses of taking part in the 2016 coup attempt.
