Chancellor Olaf Solz in Poland

by

The new German Chancellor, Olaf Solz, will travel to Warsaw today, where he will be received – with military honors – by the Prime Minister of Poland, Matthew Morawiecki.

According to a German government spokesman, the talks between the two leaders will focus on issues of bilateral, European and international interest.

Mr Soltz, who belongs to the Social Democrats (SPD, center-left), formed a government with the Greens and the Free Democrats. The new group was sworn in on Wednesday, sending the Christian Union (CDU / CSU) into opposition, while Angela Merkel withdrew from politics.

Today’s meeting coincides with the 30th anniversary of the signing of the Good Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation Treaty between Poland and Germany.

Warsaw is the third European capital that Mr Soltz will visit after taking over as chancellor. He traveled first to Paris, then to Brussels. At the end of his visit, he will lay a wreath at the monument of the unknown soldier.

New Foreign Minister Alena Berbock paid her first visit to Warsaw on Friday. He said Berlin would seek a mutually acceptable solution to the long-running dispute between the European Union and Poland over the rule of law.

Last month, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed concern that the Constitutional Court had ruled that Brussels had dealt a blow to the independence of the judiciary.

In its program agreement, Germany’s new governing coalition stressed that it intends to work for the European Union to “defend its values and the rule of law at home and abroad.”
