Thomas Mertens emphasized today that the virus no longer has the character of a pandemic in contrast to the country’s Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach who insists on talking about a pandemic
“The coronavirus pandemic is over,” said the head of the Standing Committee on Vaccinations (Stiko) Thomas Mertenspointing out that the virus has an endemic form.
Mr. Mertens stressed today speaking to Bavarian Radio (BR) that the virus no longer has the character of a pandemic, in contrast to both Health Minister Karl Lauterbach and the World Health Organization who are still talking about a pandemic.
The head of Stiko, who has repeatedly disagreed with the policy of the Ministry of Health, however emphasized that the virus will remain in the next generations and advised those at risk to “protect themselves”. He was also in favor of the use of a protective mask in crowded closed spaces, while with regard to vaccination, he referred to the need to protect only the vulnerable, who, he said, may have to be vaccinated annually, with adapted vaccines.
