NAFO: Ukraine’s Online Army of ‘Friends’ Uses Dog Memes – This Is How It Fights Russian Propaganda

It can NATO to send missiles and tanks to Ukraine, but an information war is being waged on social media by a rowdy group of online cronies called NAFO.

NAFO – or North Atlantic Fella Organization – is at the forefront of the fight against Russian propaganda and has raised a million dollars for Ukraine’s armies on the actual battlefield.

They hound Russian officials on Twitter and ensure that those who lie about the war are met by a horde of Shiba Inu dogs, who make fun of them. But beyond the jokes and memes, the group has raised huge sums to buy ammunition and vehicles for the Ukrainian resistance.

NAFO has grown from a Twitter user mocking the Russian military to a global phenomenon of thousands, counting high-ranking politicians such as UK Defense Secretary Ben Wallace and Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kalas in its ranks.

Much of the money NAFO raises goes to the Georgian Legion, a foreign volunteer unit that has been fighting in Ukraine since 2014. Estimates vary on how much money NAFO has raised.

The group is known for its combative exchanges with Russian officials, most notably diplomat Mikhail Ulyanov, who broke a basic Internet rule by picking a fight with someone who mocked him.

The NAFO team

Ulyanov had tried to pin the blame for Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine on bombing civilians. In response to a guy mocking him, he tweeted: “You uttered this nonsense. Not me”. This became a NAFO slogan and is available on t-shirts, with proceeds going to Ukraine.

NAFO slogans and pals are everywhere, including painted on a 2S7 Pion self-propelled gun in service in Ukraine. It has been dubbed the ‘Super Bonker 9,000’.

The artillery vehicle was named through SignMyRocket, a crowdfunding site that allows people to pay to have messages written on ammunition and equipment used by the Ukrainian armed forces.

Although not a military alliance, the NAFO guys adhere to one of the same basic principles: Article 5. When a member is threatened, or in the case of friends, spots some Russian propaganda on Twitter, they can tweet #article5 and other friends will come to help.

Praise for NAFO goes all the way up, with world politicians thanking them for their contribution.
