Dozens more bodies found and death toll rises from 48 to 98 – Most of the victims lost due to landslides and floods

The death toll from typhoon Nalge, which hit the Philippines in the last twenty-four hours, has risen to 98, the national disaster management agency announced today.

Dozens more bodies were found and the death toll rose from 48 to 98, the agency said.

Most of the victims were lost to landslides and floods on Friday in Mindanao, an island in the southern part of the archipelago, due to heavy rains.

The storm hit Luzon, the Southeast Asian country’s largest and most populous island, Saturday night into Sunday, sweeping everything in its path and causing power outages. The capital Manila and nearby cities were flooded.

The storm moved away yesterday evening, towards the South China Sea.

On average, about twenty typhoons and storms hit the Philippines every year; they kill residents and livestock, destroy farms, houses, roads, bridges. However, the south rarely experiences disasters.

Scientists warn that as the planet is affected by climate change, storms and hurricanes will become more and more powerful.
