During his phone call to Mahmoud Abbas, Anthony Blinken “reaffirmed (the United States’) commitment to a two-state solution,” the statement said.
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken reiterated US support for the two-state solution during a telephone conversation with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on Friday, according to a statement issued by the State Department today.
The conversation between the two men came as Israel prepares to form the most right-wing government in its history under Benjamin Netanyahu after Tuesday’s election.
Former Prime Minister Netanyahu has long since stopped short of declaring his support for the “two-state” solution, which envisions the establishment of a Palestinian state.
During his phone call to Mahmoud Abbas, Anthony Blinken “reaffirmed (the United States’) commitment to a two-state solution,” the statement said.
The two men also spoke of “joint efforts aimed at improving the quality of life of the Palestinian people, their security and freedom.”
The occupied West Bank is experiencing its bloodiest period in years: Palestinian territory is the scene of almost daily incursions by the Israeli army, as well as increasing clashes and attacks against Israeli forces.
According to the State Department, Blinken stressed during the call “his deep concern about the situation in the West Bank, particularly the worsening tension, violence and loss of Palestinian and Israeli lives, and insisted on the need for all to work the sides urgently to de-escalate”.
