The High Commissioner for Human Rights, who published his open letter on Twitter, where he has around 25,000 followers, cited six fundamental principles, including freedom of expression, privacy and guaranteeing transparency.
United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk on Saturday called on Twitter’s new owner Elon Musk to ensure that those rights are respected on the social networking site, in an open letter made public the same day.
“I call on you to ensure that human rights are at the center of Twitter management under your leadership,” Turk wrote in the open letter, where he expressed “concerns about our digital public square and Twitter’s role in her”.
“Respecting our universal human rights should act as a safety net for the use and development of the platform” and “like all companies, Twitter must understand the harms associated with its platform and take steps to fix them,” he added.
In that sense, the news that Elon Musk fired Twitter’s entire human rights team “is not, in my view, an encouraging start,” Turk deplored.
