Ukraine’s president has called on the US to stay united as US midterm elections get underway

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged the US to remain united as questions mount over US support for Ukraine following midterm elections.

“I call upon you to maintain unshakable unity, as it is now, until that day when we all hear those momentous words we have been dreaming of… Until we hear that peace has finally been restored. Democracies must not stop us on our way to victory,” he said in a recorded speech, receiving the US Medal of Freedom.

“As in any democratic society, Ukrainians have different views on life and politics. As was the case in previous years, we felt divided as to whether we could ever stand together,” Zelensky added and continued:

“But when Russia decided to destroy our freedom and wipe Ukraine off the face of the earth, we immediately united and keep that unity,” he concluded.

At the same time, the president of Ukraine stated that he was honored to be awarded the Medal of Freedom and dedicated it “to all the women and men of Ukraine” who “show the world’s largest authoritarian regime that only defeat can win in Ukraine”.

At the same time, Kyiv is further hardening its attitude towards the Kremlin, arguing today that talks with Moscow could only resume when the Kremlin cedes all Ukrainian territory. He also emphasized that Kyiv will continue to fight even if it is “stabbed in the back” by its allies.

These statements from Zelenskiy come just days after a US publication reported that Washington was urging Ukraine to show “openness” to negotiations with Russia, and to back down from its public rejection of peace talks.
