Several thousand people gathered in the center of Riga on Monday afternoon, protesting against the measures taken to deal with the pandemic and at least one policeman was injured, journalists of the French Agency reported.
“We will take power again,” shouted the crowd as police tried to calm the spirits. As the country has declared a state of emergency the demonstration was illegal, as gatherings of more than 20 people are not allowed.
“The government does not stop imposing and amending the rules for Covid (…) but the situation is not improving and the question is whether those responsible really know what they are doing,” said one of the protesters.
The protesters also denounced President Egils Levic, who allegedly bought a very expensive piano for his house with public money. Some even carried pianos to the demonstration, with the intention of “giving them to President Levic”. A police officer was injured when he was swept away by a piano.
Four protesters were arrested.
