US midterm elections: Maxwell Frost becomes the first representative of “Generation Z”

A member of “Generation Z”, in other words today’s teenagers and young adults, he also belongs to the left wing of the Democrats.

Maxwell Frost, a 25-year-old Democrat, became the first member of the “Generation Z” to take a seat in the US Congress on Tuesday, as he won a Florida seat in the House of Representatives, according to US media.

A candidate in a Florida district that generally supports Democrats, he is estimated to have won the seat by CBS and CNN.

“We won,” the new MP wrote in all capital letters and four exclamation marks. “History was made for the citizens of Florida, for Generation Z and for everyone who believes in a better future,” he added.

The young African-American, raised by an adoptive mother of Cuban descent, will probably stand out in the coming years among the dozens of gray-haired whites who make up most of the members of the US Congress: in the lower house, the average age is 58 years.

“We need that representation in Congress,” politicians who “resemble” the country’s youth “and know what they’re going through,” Mr. Frost told AFP in October.

A member of “Generation Z”, in other words today’s teenagers and young adults, he also belongs to the left wing of the Democrats. It presents messages such as the need to fight for more social justice, to prevent climate change, while also emphasizing that violence with the use of firearms must be combated.

The young man got involved in politics at the age of 15, shocked like many of his compatriots by the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School (Connecticut) in 2012.

He later became one of the national representatives of the March for Our Futures organization (“March for our future”), a movement founded after the recent school massacre at a high school in Florida.

In New Hampshire, a seat in the House of Representatives is contested by another representative of the “Generation Z”: Caroline Levitt, also 25, Republican candidate.

Although they are the same age, the two candidates could not be further apart politically. White, devout Christian, passionate supporter of Donald Trump Ms. Levitt advocates for lower taxes and tighter US border controls.
