Spain will bolster Ukraine’s armed forces with two more HAWK anti-aircraft systems, after delivering four last week, to help it repel Russian attacks and protect the country’s infrastructure.
“I can tell you that two more (HAWK anti-aircraft systems) will be sent. We are responding to a very specific request from NATO and Ukraine,” Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles told reporters.
In addition to the two US-made HAWK anti-aircraft systems, Spain will deliver six self-propelled guns to Ukraine.
Last month, Ukraine’s government appealed to NATO members for further reinforcements to counter Russian missile and drone attacks, which have killed civilians and destroyed vital infrastructure such as power plants and water grid facilities.
The attacks were seen as Moscow’s retaliation for the Crimean bridge explosion, which Russian President Vladimir Putin described as a “terrorist attack”.
