“Just look at me,” Biden tells Americans who don’t want him running again

Biden believes that it is enough to wait until public opinion tastes, thanks to his reforms, new highways, fast internet, cheaper insulin.

For now it’s just an “intention”, but o Joe Biden believes that he has every chance of being a candidate again in the 2024 presidential elections, especially if his opponent is Donald Trumpdespite the fact that the prospect of such a duel does not excite Americans.

One had to listen to the self-assured 79-year-old Democratic president during a rare press conference on Wednesday, a day after the US midterm elections.

Although the result of this electoral contest is not yet certain, it seems that the “red wave”, which the Republicans bet on, did not exist.

What would he say to the majority of Americans – 56% according to a YouGov/The Economist survey in early November – who do not want Biden to run for president again, a reporter asked him.

“Just look at me!” replied the American president.

The Democrat is not set to reveal his intentions until early next year.

But he has his case ready: although his popularity is low, at 41% according to the website FiveThirtyEight, he has already made reforms that will attract voters.

No rush

When asked what he hopes will change after the midterm elections, which confirmed the general dissatisfaction of Americans with his administration, he replied: “Nothing, because Americans are just starting to find out what we are doing. And the more they learn, the more favorable they will be” to us.

Biden believes that it is enough to wait until public opinion tastes, thanks to his reforms, new highways, fast internet, cheaper insulin.

He believes that the passing of time is in his favor and nothing is forcing him to declare his intentions, while on the contrary, the 76-year-old Trump has already promised “a big announcement” for next Tuesday.

And this despite the fact that 53% of Americans, according to a poll, do not want the former president to be a candidate again.

Biden has often said, and certainly still believes, that he is in a better position to beat the millionaire Republican again.

According to the exit polls, “confidence in Biden, although it has decreased, exceeds that in Trump by a percentage equal” to the result of the 2020 election, said Wendy Sherman, a professor of political science at Brown.

Sherman also believes that “as a good politician,” Biden has no reason to speculate at this time about another challenger, for example the Republican rising star, the 44-year-old governor of Florida Ron DeSandis.

When asked on Wednesday who he would prefer to face, the US president simply said: “It will be fun to see them go head-to-head.”

Anointing

One issue that remains is the age of biden: His personal doctor had declared a year ago that his health is good and that the pace at which he lives could overwhelm his younger self.

But now his stride is slower, his hair is thinning, and his various speech impediments testify to Biden’s 80 years.

“As the head of the party it would be a political mistake not to seek re-election because that would destroy his remaining capital in Congress and public opinion. “Just to confirm and protect what he’s already done, he has no choice but to try for re-election,” Sherman said.

This may cause a great deal of internal competition among the Democrats.

But the political scientist recalls that in 2008 Barack Obama was elected in the presidential elections, despite the difficult battle to win the party’s anointing and notes:

“Even if Biden runs (…) and loses to another Democrat, the party can always win the 2024 presidential election.”
