“We cannot allow two member states (Italy-France) to fight in public and create yet another major political crisis on immigration,” notes the vice-president of the European Commission
The immigration situation is explosive, underlined the vice-president of the European Commission, Margaritis Schinas in Politico, on the occasion of the developments in Italy with the ship Ocean Viking.
“Some of the member states who want us to intervene in the current crisis … are the ones who are consistently blocking progress on the (Migration) Pact,” he explained. But, he added, “you can’t have both,” confirming that he was specifically referring to “Italy,” Politico adds.
“We cannot allow it in two member states (Italy-France) fighting in public, and creating yet another big political crisis on immigration”, also notes Margaritis Schoinas.
Therefore, the Commission “takes the initiative” to request “a ministerial meeting before the scheduled December Justice and Home Affairs Council”, added Mr. Schoinas.
At the same time, the vice-president of the Commission stated that the Commission will try to proceed “with an action plan with specific initiatives for the entire route (of the Central Mediterranean)”.
He added that the proposal “would be something that would cover not only the element of solidarity, but the whole route [της Κεντρικής Μεσογείου]». The plan should also address “departures,” meaning the movement of migrants from North African countries such as Tunisia and Libya, he noted.
