At least 50 people were killed early this morning when a tanker exploded in Cape Aitien, Haiti, injuring several people, according to an interim report released by a local official.
“I found on the spot that 50 to 54 people were burned alive. “It’s impossible for them to be identified,” said Patrick Almonor, Cappadocia’s deputy mayor.
“About 20” homes in the area caught fire after the blast, according to Almonor, raising fears that the final toll could be heavier.
“We are not yet able to provide details on the number of victims inside the homes,” he said.
This poor Caribbean country is plagued by severe fuel shortages as gangs break into parts of the supply chain.
This causes strong dissatisfaction among the population and Haiti was also the scene of protests yesterday, Monday against the increase in the price of gasoline.
Justinian Hospital, where many of the injured have been transported, is finding it difficult to cope with the outbreak, as many of these people are in critical condition.
“We do not have the means to treat the many people who have severe burns,” a hospital nurse told AFP. “I’m afraid we will not be able to save them all.”
