Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked the Canadian Prime Minister for this new funding.

The Canadian government announced today that it will double the amount of military aid to Ukraine, which will now exceed one billion Canadian dollars (€729 million).

“This additional military aid will support the Ukrainians as they continue their courageous fight against President Putin’s illegal invasion, and these new sanctions will put additional pressure on those who support these hostilities,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked the Canadian Prime Minister for this new funding.

“This proves once again that Ukraine and Canada are true allies who share common values and have the same goals,” he tweeted. “Together we will win!”.

This new funding aims to “help the Ukrainian armed forces defend their country against Russia’s brutal and unjustified invasion.”

The Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC), a community organization representing the diaspora, also welcomed the announcement, saying it was “grateful” for “(Canada’s) continued commitment to the freedom of Ukraine.”

The funds will be used to finance military equipment, surveillance and communications, fuel and medical equipment.

Less than two months after the start of the war, Ottawa had already approved a first military aid package of 500 million.

Ottawa also imposed new sanctions on 23 Russian officials. Among them are “police and investigators, prosecutors, judges and prison officials who are involved in gross and systematic human rights violations against Russian opposition leaders.”

This list includes Russian officials accused of violating the rights of two opponents who are now in prison: Alexei Navalny, opposition leader and rival of Vladimir Putin, and Vladimir Kara-Murza, winner of the 2022 Vaclav Havel Human Rights Prize.
