Five people were killed by gunmen on motorcycles who launched an attack on protesters and security forces in the southwestern Iranian city of Izeh, officials said today.
“Terrorist and armed elements” arrived on two motorcycles in the central market of this city in Khuzestan province and opened fire on protesters and security guards, killing five people and injuring 10,” the official Iranian news agency reported. Irna, citing an unnamed official.
The attackers opened fire at 5:30 p.m. (local time) with automatic weapons and several policemen were among the injured, Khuzestan’s deputy governor in charge of security, Waliullah Hayati, said on public television.
He added that three men, a woman and a little girl were killed and that several wounded were in critical condition.

On October 26, at least 13 people were killed in the city of Shiraz in an attack — claimed by the Islamic State group — inside the Shah Serag Mausoleum, the largest Shiite Muslim mausoleum in southern Iran.
The attack comes as the Islamic Republic is rocked by a wave of protests following the September 16 death of Mahsha Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish woman of Iranian origin who was arrested by morality police on charges of violating Iran’s strict dress code.
Dozens of people, mostly protesters, but also members of the security forces have lost their lives since the protests began.
