“Britain knows what it means to fight for freedom. We’re with you all the way,” Sunak tweeted
London, Thanasis Gavos
UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak made his first trip to war-torn Kyiv, meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky and other Ukrainian officials in the morning.
In a Telegram post, in which he shared a short video of Rishi Sunak’s arrival, the Ukrainian leader said: “Since the first days of the war, Ukraine and the United Kingdom have been strong allies. During today’s meeting we discussed the most important issues both for our countries and for global security. Together we are stronger and we will achieve the desired results.”
Thank you, @RishiSunak. With friends like you by our side, we are confident in our victory. Both of our nations know what it means to stand up for freedom 🇺🇦🇬🇧 https://t.co/9oFfswxp3K

A Downing Street spokesman said Mr Sunak’s unannounced trip was aimed at confirming Britain’s continued support for the Ukrainians.
In a later statement, the British leader described his presence in the Ukrainian capital as “deeply awakening” and pledged continued support to the Ukrainian government.

In this context, he announced a package of 50 million pounds to strengthen Ukrainian air defenses to “protect Ukrainian citizens and critical national infrastructure from an intense barrage of Russian strikes.”
The package includes 125 anti-aircraft weapons and technology to counter the Iranian drones used by the Russians for attacks, including dozens of radars and electronic equipment against unmanned aerial vehicles.
These are in addition to the more than a thousand new pieces of anti-aircraft missiles that the British Defense Secretary announced weeks ago would be sent to Kyiv.
The UK will also step up the provision of training to the Ukrainian armed forces by sending engineers and military medics to the region.
“I am proud of how the UK has stood with Ukraine from the start and I am here today to say that the UK and our allies will continue to support Ukraine as it fights to the end of this barbaric war to achieve a just peace,” said Rishi Sunak.
He added that while the armed forces succeed in repelling the Russian forces on the ground, the civilians are barbarically bombarded from the air.
