“What angers us is the impunity of the perpetrators and the mistreatment of the victims” when they turn to the authorities, explained Maege Noir, a member of the #NousToutes organization that coordinated the organization of the marches.

The organizations are asking for an annual budget of two billion, but also a “framework law” that would provide for the establishment of “special units” in the police and judicial system, financial help to “keep safe” female victims, 15,000 additional places in centers accommodation for abused women and the reinforcement of the sex education course in schools.

French Gender Equality Minister Isabelle Rohm has hinted that she is open to the creation of a police force and a body of judges, an issue being considered by a parliamentary committee.

Feminists’ outrage is fueled by the increased number of femicides this year — 100 have already been recorded since January, compared to 122 for the whole year last year, according to official figures — but also by the political world’s reluctance to removes officials who have been accused of violence against women.

From 2017 to 2021, the French interior ministry noted that the number of reported rapes and attempted rapes doubled, from 16,900 to 34,300.

The ministry estimated that this was due to the fact that victims were more likely to make complaints, which it considered a sign of women’s “liberation of speech”. An expression that the organizations reject, explaining that “women have always spoken, but they have not been listened to”, as Maege Noir pointed out.
