Demonstrations following the death of 22-year-old Mahsha Amini in September turned into a popular uprising by Iranians from all walks of life.
Iran, which has blamed “foreign adversaries” for protests sparked by the death of a woman who had been detained by morality police, said today that 40 foreign nationals had been arrested for their role in the unrest.
Protests have been taking place in the Islamic Republic following the death of 22-year-old Iranian-Kurdish Mahsa Amini, who was detained on September 16 by morality police because her clothing was deemed “inappropriate”.
“So far, 40 foreign nationals have been arrested for their involvement in the protests,” Iranian justice spokesman Massoud Setiagesi told a televised news conference without disclosing their nationalities.
In September, Tehran announced that nine Europeans had been arrested for participating in the protests.
Tehran has accused foreign enemies and their agents of orchestrating the protests, which turned into a popular uprising by Iranians from all walks of life in one of the boldest challenges to clerical rule since the 1979 revolution.
