The capital of Ukraine, Kyiv, has three million inhabitants. Among them on Thursday morning were several who, holding empty water bottles, were patiently trying to fill them from the gutters. Others exchanged messages with each other to find out which of their friends had either electricity or water. For many safe havens were certain cafes. There were not a few who rushed to them for water, food, heating and charging their mobile phones.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said 70% of the Ukrainian capital was without power until yesterday morning adding that the authorities will continue to do their best to repair the damage. Later in the afternoon, he announced that water supply had been restored in the Ukrainian capital. However, 15 districts across the country are still facing water problems.

Moscow’s strategy remains the same. Ukraine’s energy infrastructure remains the target. The only difference now is simply that he admits it. And while attacks on civilian infrastructure may be war crimes for the West, as the French president reiterated, they are legitimate military targets for Moscow.

More specifically, according to the Russian Ministry of Defense, the targeted energy infrastructures are linked to the Ukrainian army and each attack aims to cut off the supply of soldiers, weapons and ammunition to the front line. Also, for Moscow, Russia bears absolutely no responsibility for the disaster.

On the contrary, Ukraine is responsible. According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, “the leadership of Ukraine has every opportunity to bring the situation back to normal. It has every opportunity to provide a solution in such a way as to satisfy the demands of the Russian side and, consequently, put an end to any possible suffering of the civilian population.”

“Without power or without you? Without you” Volodymyr Zelensky had clarified earlier, reminding that the Ukrainians will stop fighting only when the Russian soldiers leave the Ukrainian territory.

In Kiev, it may have stopped snowing for now, but the rain has come, while the frost remains. The only constant lighting in the Ukrainian capital is the headlights of cars. In the early hours of Wednesday, NASA satellite images recorded a Ukraine plunged into darkness, like a black dot, next to the illuminated European states.

A total of 3,700 so-called “victory points” have been set up across the country at the moment, where those who visit will be able to warm up, eat, drink water and hot tea, connect to the internet and charge their mobile phones .

The latest Russian barrage of attacks killed 11 people and forced the shutdown of all of the country’s nuclear plants for the first time in 40 years. At the same time, the restoration work continues with the risk of life for those who participate in it since, as reported by the Ukrainian authorities, the Russians are hitting again the same place they attacked earlier with the aim of killing those who are there.

Early yesterday afternoon, Kherson was hit again. Those who endured the Russian occupation are now boarding the buses with whatever possessions they can carry and leaving. It’s not just the new bombings that are going on, it’s also the cold. In the city there is no heating and there is no drinking water either.

The winter is predicted to be long, but the morale of the Ukrainians is enduring. Many speaking to foreign news networks report that their anger against Russia is only growing. As they typically say, if Russia is counting on us to bend, then it should know that its plan will just backfire.
