The death toll from the earthquake that hit Java on Monday (21/11) continues to rise
The death toll from the earthquake that hit Java in Indonesia on Monday (21/11) has risen to 310, as announced by the national disaster management agency.
Another 24 people are still missing after the 5.6-magnitude earthquake that triggered landslides and destroyed buildings in West Java, said Suhariando, the agency’s chief, who like many Indonesians goes by just one name.
“These 24 people have been identified,” he said at a press conference.
According to Herni Alfianti, head of the national first aid services, the search will continue until Monday, even later if not all the dead have been recovered by then.
“The problems are the stability of the ground, the volume of landslides aggravated by continuous rains and fears of aftershocks,” he told Kompas television.
More than 2,000 people were injured, about 56,000 houses were destroyed and more than 62,000 residents were forced to flee their homes, Suhariado said.
A 7-year-old girl was found dead in Indonesia on Friday morning (11/25), which rescuers were searching for after Monday’s earthquake that killed at least 272 people.
Ashika Noor Fauziah’s lifeless body was recovered from a collapsed house in Sianjur city, near the epicenter of the earthquake.
