Investigative journalism website cites FSB sources – Putin is willing to sacrifice thousands of Russian soldiers to achieve his goal in the coming years – ISW says covert recruitment

The Russian president Vladimir Putin does not intend to end the war in Ukraine and is ready to continue it for a few more years, regardless of the losses of the Russian army, with the aim of capturing Kyiv, the investigative journalism website Vaznie istorii writes, citing sources close to the Federal Security Service (FSB).

“If we speak in general terms, then the plan is as follows: to buy time for the time being and to stabilize the front with the help of the troops. And then start all over again in the spring” said a source close to the FSB.

Russia’s political and military leadership is prepared to accept that by spring the losses in dead and wounded will reach about 100,000. “But this does not scare anyone: they will be replaced by the lottery” said the interlocutor of the site close to the FSB.

The Russian Ministry of Defense plans to prepare 120,000 draftees, said a source close to the general staff. According to the said source, the conscripts are currently covering the second line of defense, to thicken and strengthen the front line.

“Because of the lack of people we never had people in the second line of defense. In some locations gaps of 20 kilometers were observed between the same source clarified, adding that “for this reason, Putin is not canceling the decree on partial conscription”.

Earlier the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) had announced, that the Russian authorities intend to continue the secret recruitment even in the spring period when new calls are made. That in Russia the secret conscription continues is something that is confirmed by many indirect indications. For example this week the Ministry of Digital Development announced that it will set up an additional list for deferrals from the military for those working in IT technology companies.

The lotteries, according to ISW data “they will almost certainly be sent to Ukraine in March or April 2023”.

On October 28 Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu had informed Vladimir Putin that conscription in Russia was complete. According to Shoigu “the set goal of conscription of 300,000 people has been achieved, no other conscription goals are planned.” However, to date there has been no official decree to complete the conscription. The Kremlin had said that such a decree was “not needed”.

This year’s fall lottery calls began on November 1st and will continue until December 31st.

The Russian Ministry of Justice has labeled the website Vaznie istorii an “undesirable organization”. Posting this text in Russia may result in a fine, and reposting may result in criminal prosecution.
