Nearly a month after losing the presidential election, Brazil’s outgoing President Jair Bolsonaro, for weeks in limbo, reappeared in public today, attending a ceremony at a military academy but remaining silent.

The former army captain who has not recognized the victory of his opponent Luis Inacio Lula da Silva in the October 30 election, presided over an official graduation ceremony at the “Agulhas Negras” Military Academy in Resende, Rio de Janeiro State.

Dressed in a dark suit and tie, his face visibly filled with sadness, the far-right outgoing president stood next to Vice President Hamilton Murao and Defense Minister Paulo Sergio Nogueira, both generals.

But he who is due to leave office at midnight on December 31, had no words to say to the approximately 400 officer candidates and others present at the Military Academy.

“Let me start by thanking President Bolsonaro for his presence, which adds luster to the event by being here,” said army chief Marco Antonio Freire.

After Lula won the presidential election, Bolsonaro, 67, remained virtually isolated in his official residence in Alvorada. His schedule remains relaxed, with only a few meetings with ministers and allies.

His social media accounts, on which he was very active during his presidency, have been inactive for almost a month.

Three days after the election, he appeared in a video to ask his supporters to open roads they had blocked to protest the election result.

Since then, the president of Latin America’s largest country has not spoken publicly. He also did not attend the G20 meeting in Bali, nor the UN Climate Conference COP27 in Egypt.

Advisers and allies of the president have given different explanations for Bolsonaro’s absence, from his alleged “sadness” at losing the election to a bacterial infection on the skin of one of his legs.

Some of his supporters continue to demonstrate outside barracks in various cities, demanding military intervention against the election result.

According to local media, Bolsonaro greeted scores of supporters who gathered near the military academy today, with some demanding the intervention of the armed forces to overturn the election result.
