The British actress had accused Roman Polanski of sexual abuse when she was a teenager

French-Polish director Roman Polanski will go on trial for defamation on March 5, 2024, for questioning the veracity of statements made by British actress Charlotte Lewis, who accused him of sexually abusing her when she was still a teenager.

In 2010 the actress, who starred in Polanski’s 1986 film Piratessaid she was sexually assaulted by the director in his Paris apartment when she was 16 in the early 1980s.

In an interview with Paris Match magazine in December 2019, Polanski disputed this allegation. “You see, the key quality of a good liar is an excellent memory. They constantly mention Charlotte Lewis in the list of my accusers, without ever revealing her contradictions,” the 89-year-old artist, who has accused many of rape, said at the time.

THE Polanski was referring to statements Lewis made in a 1999 interview with the British tabloid News of the World. She pointed out in particular a phrase attributed to the actress by the newspaper at the time: “I knew that Roman had done something bad in the US but I wanted to be his mistress (…) I probably wanted it more than he did.”

Since 2010, the actress has been questioning the accuracy of her previous statements. “Many references attributed to me in the News of the World article are not accurate,” he commented at the time.

After Polanski’s Paris Match interview, Lewis’ lawyers filed a lawsuit against him.

Since the late 1970s there have been many accusations against Polanski, the Polish director who was born in Paris in 1933 and has been awarded three Oscars and a Palme d’Or at Cannes.
