Ukraine: Mayor of Kyiv urges residents to stock up on water, food and warm clothes in case of blackout

He also asked residents if they might consider going to stay with friends on the outskirts of the city

The mayor of Kiev today called on the residents of the Ukrainian capital to stock up on water, food and warm clothes, in case of a total blackout due to Russian aerial bombardments. If they can, residents should consider staying with friends on the outskirts of the city, he said.

Vitali Klitschko warned that the temperature inside homes could plummet if there is a blackout and infrastructure is destroyed if there is no electricity, water, sewage and heating.

“The temperature in the apartments may not be much different from that outside,” the former boxing champion told a safety forum organized in Kyiv. Today in the capital the thermometer showed -4 degrees Celsius. “I appeal to people (…) to stock up on water, drinking water, long-lasting food, warm clothes.”

Many power plants across Ukraine have shut down this week following Russian missile attacks.

Klitschko urged those who can to stay temporarily at the homes of friends or relatives on the outskirts of Kiev.

Kyiv authorities have organized 430 places where people can warm up and charge their mobile phones, but the mayor explained that this number is not enough for a city of 3.5 million people. “Not even 500 spaces would be enough, even 5,000 would be too few,” he stressed.
