The 53-year-old Mr. Castillo faces criminal investigations into six corruption cases in addition to the parliamentary process, which he sees as an attempt by prosecutors to topple him in a “coup” after previous attempts by the right to stop him failed.

Peru’s right-wing Congress on Thursday approved a resolution to start the trial and possible impeachment of President Pedro Castillo, the third in a row since the former teacher and trade unionist was elected last year with a radical left party.

Just a few hours earlier yesterday, a high-level delegation from the Organization of American States (OAS) proposed a “political truce” between the executive and the legislature as it released its preliminary report following its visit to the Andean country in late November.

The Latin American country has been experiencing successive political crises in recent years, with a permanent feature of the conflict between these two powers. He has known, including Mr. Castillo, five presidents since 2016, due to suspension and resignation procedures.
